Berg Wind and Painting in Edgemead
By Edgemead Painters - Expert advice from the professionals
Edgemead is one of the Cape Town suburbs where berg wind conditions are most extreme. The suburb's inland Northern Suburbs position means it experiences the full force of berg wind events — temperatures above 38 degrees, humidity below 20%, and strong hot dry winds. These conditions make exterior painting impossible and attempting it is a waste of time and money.
Why Berg Wind Ruins Paint
Water-based exterior paint requires a controlled drying process to form a properly bonded film. During berg wind, paint skins over within seconds — the surface dries before the paint has penetrated and bonded to the substrate. The result looks fine initially but has poor adhesion and fails rapidly — typically within one to two seasons. Never paint exterior surfaces during berg wind conditions regardless of schedule pressure.
The Right Painting Window
Paint early morning (6–9am) or late afternoon (from 4pm) in summer when surfaces have cooled. Avoid any day with a berg wind forecast. Autumn (March to May) is the optimal painting season — berg winds ease, temperatures moderate and conditions allow proper paint film formation. See our full Edgemead painting guide.
