Anti-Rust Guide for Edgemead Homes
By Edgemead Painters - Expert advice from the professionals
Rust on gates, steel windows, burglar bars and garage doors is a persistent maintenance problem in Edgemead — particularly on older properties where original steel Crittal-style windows are still in place. Getting rust treatment right prevents expensive damage and recurring maintenance costs.
The Correct Process
Never paint over rust. Remove all rust mechanically to clean bare metal using wire brush, angle grinder or sandpaper. Apply zinc-phosphate or zinc-chromate rust-inhibiting primer. Then apply hard enamel topcoat. This system, properly applied, provides years of protection. Painting over rust without treating it simply hides the problem temporarily — the rust continues spreading under the paint and causes blistering within months.
Annual Inspection
Inspect all metal surfaces annually for chips and rust spots. Touch up any damage immediately. In Edgemead's wetter-than-average Northern Suburbs microclimate, a chip left through one winter can develop into a significant rust problem by the following spring.
